Cleaning and Caretaker Support

cleaning_caretakingOldham Council is the preferred service provider for the schools of Oldham. Our objective is to provide a responsive and flexible service.

We employ over 450 part time workers from across the borough to deliver high quality services led by a team of dedicated and trained professionals with a wealth of experience and knowledge of dealing with customer expectations.

Summary of the service

We are responsible for the cleaning of over 80 primary schools and 90 other buildings, including private customers.

We pride ourselves in providing a cleaning service for each individual school, and offer cost effective solutions to cleaning and caretaker issues.

The team will provide an efficient service through flexible service level agreements to meet the specific requirements of our Headteachers.

Business continuity plans are in place for events or situations that could stop the cleaning service from delivering its core service.

Caretaker support scheme

Our caretaker support scheme offers a full and unique service to schools allowing headteachers and
governing bodies to concentrate on school priorities.

We will advise and support on the following matters:

  • Recruitment and selection.
  • Monitor the standards of cleaning.
  • Organise work loads.
  • Technical advice on floor treatments and other cleaning methods.
  • Provide training to ensure health and safety requirements have been identified and met.
  • We will provide full caretaker cover in the absence of your caretaker.
  • The caretaker relief team are all fully trained and conversant with health and safety legislation.
  • Key holding duties (including weekends).
  • Opening and closing (call outs).

Benefits of the service

Our operational team is responsible for the management of first line cleaning staff. This includes
cleaning managers, cleaning supervisors and site supervisors. We believe a clean school is a key
requirement for student education and well being.

All cleaning staff are security vetted through the Criminal Records Bureau.

We repair, maintain and replace when necessary all cleaning equipment and machinery, and we will supply cleaning materials using products that comply with environmental standards.
Our service is delivered by a large workforce who is committed to generating a clean and pleasant
environment for staff, pupils and members of the public.

All staff complete a full and comprehensive training plan, including:

  • COSHH trained.
  • Health & safety.
  • Manual handling.
  • Equality & diversity.
  • NVQ Level 2 in progress with 40 + staff having recently completed.

Service standards

To define the standard of our service a cleaning quality audit form is sent to schools as an opportunity for us to welcome any comments/suggestions on how we may improve any aspects of our service. The most recent survey showed of those schools who responded they rated the service as high or excellent standard.

Performance and TSO have and will continue to advise and support both the headteacher and cleaning services on any matters that may arise from time to time.

Additional services include:

  • Telephone / computer cleaning.
  • Carpet / upholstery cleaning.
  • Floor restoration.
